Phnom Penh comprises twelve administrative divisions, with Longbian District standing out as one of the four urban administrative districts. Positioned on the northeast side of the urban area, Longbian District occupies the prime quadrant along Phnom Penh's central axis. Bounded by Monivong Avenue to the west, Sihanoukville Avenue to the south, and the Tonle Sap River to the east, it spans approximately 7.44 square kilometers. Esteemed as one of the earliest developed areas in Phnom Penh, Longbian District boasts three bustling markets—Old Street Market, Qianlong Street, and New Street Market. Hosting iconic landmarks like the Royal Palace, Zhen La Theater, Central Market, Ta Tsai Mountain, and Old Night Market, Longbian District mirrors the economic vibrancy akin to its neighboring BKK District.
The origin of Daun Penh's name traces back to Mrs. Penh, a widow of affluence. Legend has it that post a tempest, Mrs. Penh discovered a colossal ancient tree near the river's end. Within its hollows lay four bronze Buddha statues and a stone Buddha, prompting her to commission a temple atop an artificial hill to safeguard these sacred relics. Thus emerged Wat Phnom, a revered sanctuary for prayers and solace.
For enthusiasts of culture and history, the National Museum beckons as a pivotal destination. Established in the 1920s, this museum stands as Cambodia's premier repository of historical and cultural artifacts. Housing a vast collection exceeding 14,000 sculptures, ethnographic pieces, and assorted relics spanning prehistoric eras to the post-Angkorian era, the National Museum stands as a custodian of Cambodia's artistic heritage.
Daun Penh District epitomizes not only a commercial and tourist hub but also a nucleus of administrative, cultural, and historical significance, often dubbed the "Wall Street" of Phnom Penh. Nestled by the Mekong River, the district's allure entices expatriates, fostering a bustling landscape of restaurants, hotels, bars, and cafes that pulsate with life, especially during the vibrant nightlife.
Furthermore, Daun Penh District serves as a cornerstone in the tourism service industry, characterized by stiff competition. Notable landmarks such as the riverside, central market, and the vicinity of the National Museum are prime real estate, commanding hefty rents. The district pulsates with a diverse culinary scene, entertainment options, and a thriving nightlife. Moreover, Daun Penh's real estate market remains buoyant, attracting a steady influx of local and foreign investors keen on developing properties within the district and its environs.
With an eye on the future, Daun Penh emerges as Phnom Penh's progressive epicenter, poised for substantial growth and development. Forecasts indicate a trajectory where Daun Penh is set to evolve into the city's most dynamic and advanced district, drawing parallels to Singapore's iconic Orchard Road, renowned globally for its shopping and tourism offerings.
As the paramount district in Phnom Penh, Khan Daun Penh witnessed a recorded total population of 126,550 in 2008, marking a decline from the 1998 figures. Notably, while Srah Chak and Voat Phnum experienced population growth, other regions witnessed a decrease in inhabitants, with Phsar Thmei Bei noting a substantial decline of 21.55%.
